Playscape is a design-and-construct collaboration with Project Little Dream in 2011. The first project that inspires me of what design can achieve in the world.

“Let’s design a playground in front of the village school. Design whatever you feel is the best and could be built within 10 days with the villagers.”

Playscape was designed on the spot.
Not precise, just what feels right, and being inspired by the country, the village and its people.

  • It’s hot in Cambodia ➜ Put the blocks like the shrubs under the tree shadows.

  • Villagers bike a lot ➜ Leave gaps in between the blocks so they can park their bikes there.

  • Wood is expensive ➜ No concrete casting. Use bricks and mortar for the structure, and cement on the exterior.

Playscape was intended to be a playground for the children, but villagers also used it as a daily produce market, plaza and stage.

When things are put together, a community is formed. Any community informs different relationships.

Project Little Dream aims to further education quality - by designing, building, and running village schools in under-priviledged areas of Takeo, Cambodia. Through creating a safe and encouraging school environment, we promote our students’ literacy and knowledge in public health and architecture. We honour culture, language and aesthetics. ︎
